Frame Mounted Heat Shield Installation

FIGURE 11:

NOTE: If the ambulance is already equipped with an equivalent shield or larger (shown in Figure 11), omit this procedure.

1. Locate the existing 0.29 inch diameter hole in the front tank front support which is located 4 inches from the fuel tank support strap attachment in the driveshaft kick up (See Figure 11). With a drill, enlarge this hole to 11/32 inch diameter.

2. Loosely assemble the heat shield (Item 29) front bracket (the widest of the two brackets on the heat shield) to the 11/32 inch diameter hole, drilled in Step "1", with a 5/16 inch nut and bolt provided (Items 32 and 33).

3. Align the rear heat shield bracket to the number 4 crossmember as shown in Figure 11. Using the heat shield rear bracket as a guide, center punch the required hole location and drill an 11/32 inch hole in the crossmember.

4. Attach the rear shield bracket to the number 4 crossmember with one 5/16 inch nut and bolt provided (Items 32 and 33).

5. Torque both heat shield attachments to 16 to 23 N-m (12 to 17 ft. lb.)

NOTE - 1. On some ambulance vehicles based on 138 inch wheelbase E-350 Cutaway, the front fuel tank support and the frame number 4 crossmember positions may no longer fit the provided heat shield (item 29). On these vehicles the heat shield will have to be modified to fit. If difficulty is encountered, consult the Ambulance Manufacturer or contact the FPSD District Office.

2. On some vehicles, oversize, non-Ford mufflers have been installed that interfere with the heat shield. These mufflers must be replaced with the Ford muffler; ref: Ambulance Vehicle Inspection Table 2.

3. The shield (Item 29) is not required on vehicles without the mid-ship fuel tank option.
SHEET 14 OF 24
4. On ambulances based on 158-inch wheelbase E-350 Cutaway, the heat shield will have to be modified to fit as follows:

a. Remove the mounting brackets on the heat shield (item 29). Enlarge all holes to 11/32" diameter and mount the front (widest) bracket at the rear of the shield with standard 5/16" diameter hardware.

b. Fabricate a new front mounting bracket, using 3/16" x 1.5" mild steel strap, which is 2" longer than the remaining (narrow) bracket, and install it with standard 5/16" hardware.

c. Locate the existing 0.29 inch diameter hole in the front tank REAR support and enlarge this hole to 11/32" diameter. On some models, a plastic clip will be installed in this hole. Remove and discard this clip as required.

d. Loosely assemble the heat shield to the 11/32" hole in the front tank REAR support with a 5/16 nut and bolt provided (items 32 and 33) and cut out the shield as required to clear the driveshaft center bearing crossmember and bracket. Align the shield to the muffler and drill an 11/32" diameter hole next to the right rear center bearing bracket rivet. Attach the shield to the center bearing crossmember with the remaining 5/16 inch nut and bolt and torque all attachments to 12 to 17 ft. lbs.
