AMBULANCE INSPECTION INSTRUCTIONS
This publication describes components and areas on ambulances that should be inspected for manufacturing and maintenance-related conditions which may contribute to fuel expulsion from fuel filler pipes or cause excessive underbody temperatures or build-up of excessive pressure in the fuel system. Although developed on the basis of many ambulance inspections, this procedure is limited to an examination of the vehicle for fuel expulsion-related conditions, and is not intended to be a comprehensive, general inspection of the ambulance. It is not possible to anticipate all of the ways in which individual ambulances may have been manufactured for a particular EMS service, or all of the possible conditions of unrepaired damage, overdue maintenance or post-manufacture modifications that may be present.
Conditions which result from overdue time or mileage-related maintenance are the responsibility of the owner/operator, as are unrepaired damage and post-manufacture modifications. Such conditions should be coded as "M" on the inspection sheet.
Although this inspection program concerns only those aspects of the vehicle's condition addressed by this publication, other obvious conditions that need correction may come to your attention in the course of this inspection. These, too, should be brought to the owner's attention by listing them on the inspection sheet.
Upon completion of each step of the inspection, any discrepancies from the inspection checklist should be noted by inspection step number and a complete description of the discrepancy should be provided regardless of whether a repair is to be made immediately or not. If you have any questions concerning a particular condition or need assistance in determining appropriate corrections, contact your Ford Parts and Service Division District Office.
An ambulance which is found to have discrepancies involving the inspection procedure item numbers listed below should not be released to the operator until those conditions are corrected. Such conditions have a direct effect on underbody temperatures and fuel system performance. Refer to the item number in the procedure for a description of acceptable condition requirements for each listed item.
ITEM NO. UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION
5 Zero voltage at the electric choke cap with the engine running, or if the choke does not open with
a warm engine.
9 Absence of Ford high-flow fuel filler cap(s), or certified equivalent caps.
10 Ruptures or leaks in the exhaust system.
14 Any liquid trap in the fuel filler system or pinches, kinks, holes in, or exposure of the fuel filler
hose or fuel filler vent hose to sharp edges.
15 Mispositioned, damaged or leaking fuel tank vapor valve or grommet.
16/17 Kinked, pinched or otherwise restricted vapor vent lines.
18 Any pinched, kinked, leaking or otherwise damaged fuel lines, including nylon tubes which have
blistered covers.
19 Non-Ford fuel pump(s).
Additionally, any visible wiring with damage which could result in a short circuit must be repaired before the ambulance is released.
OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE WITH OTHER UNCORRECTED DISCREPANCIES IS NOT ADVISABLE BUT IS ACCEPTABLE ON AN INTERIM BASIS ONLY UNTIL THE OPERATOR CAN HAVE THOSE OTHER DISCREPANCIES CORRECTED.
The ambulance manufacturer should be contacted for any of the above repairs that are its responsibility. Normal maintenance repairs are the responsibility of the customer. On Ford-related repairs, contact the FPSD District Office for direction. Issues pertaining to reimbursement of any repairs should be directed to the FPSD District Office.
