Engine - Deck/Head Surfacing Prohibition
83ford17 Article No. 83-10-18CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER BLOCK FACE - (2.2L AND 6.9L DIESEL) - RE-SURFACING PROHIBITED
LIGHT TRUCKS E & F SERIES/RANGER
The re-surfacing (grinding) of cylinder head and cylinder block faces is not an approved service procedure on the 6.9L and 2.2L diesel engines. Due to the high compression ratios (above 20 to 1) of indirect injection diesel engines, the clearance between the piston and cylinder head is tightly controlled. Severe damage to engine components may result if the cylinder head or cylinder block faces are re-surfaced.
The proper procedures for the inspection and handling of diesel engine cylinder heads and cylinder blocks are identified on Pages 22-08-50 and 22-08-54 of the 1983 Light Truck Shop Manual for the 6.9L diesel engine and Pages 22-09-45 and 22-09-53 of the 1983 Ranger Shop Manual for the 2.2L diesel engine. These procedures should be followed for all cylinder head and cylinder block inspection and overhaul.
