COOLING SYSTEM (6.9L DIESEL) - REVISED REFILLING PROCEDURE
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-84 F & E-SERIES
When engine coolant is replaced, it is essential that the cooling system be completely refilled to ensure that no air pockets remain in the engine cylinder head and block water passages.
Before filling the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of specified coolant and water, perform the following:
FIGURE 14:
^ Loosen the glow plug controller (located at the rear of the left cylinder head - Figure 14). The pipe thread will allow the controller to wobble and vent air.
^ Slowly fill the radiator with coolant, and watch for steady coolant seepage out of the glow plug controller hole in the cylinder head.
^ Re-tighten the glow plug controller until snug. Liquid thread sealant may be used if necessary to prevent leakage.
^ Continue filling the radiator to the cap seal in the filler neck.
^ Install the radiator cap to the pressure relief position by installing the cap to the fully-installed position, and then backing off to the first stop.
^ Start and idle engine until the radiator upper hose is warm (approximately 10-15 minutes).
^ Shut off engine. Cautiously remove radiator cap, and add coolant until radiator is full. Re-install radiator cap securely.
FIGURE 15:
^ Add coolant (50/50 mixture of coolant concentrate and water) to reservoir through top opening/cap which is labeled. Don't remove hose from bottle. (Add coolant to the fill mark, five quarts if empty, Figure 15.)
^ Upon subsequent engine operation to normal operating temperatures, coolant will normally be in the recovery reservoir and later transfer to the radiator after the engine has cooled.
