Disassembly
1. On 1982 - 83 models and 1984 Bronco II and Ranger, remove two rivets and one screw, index tab, thermostatic spring housing assembly, spring housing gasket, spring housing baffle plate and fast idle link.
2. On 1984 - 86 models except 1984 Bronco II and Ranger, remove two rivets and one attaching screw or three attaching screws, as equipped, plus retaining ring, the thermostatic spring housing assembly, spring housing gasket, Locking and Index plate and fast idle cam link.
3. On all models, remove EGR WOT dump valve and bracket assembly and front mounted solenoid and bracket assembly, if equipped.
4. On 1982 - 83 models and 1984 Bronco II and Ranger, remove pulldown diaphragm adjustment limiting shield.
5. On all models, remove two retaining screws disconnecting choke pulldown link and remove pulldown motor assembly.
6. Disengage link from choke shaft lever.
7. Remove air horn assembly attaching screws, dashpot if equipped, air horn assembly and air horn gasket.
8. Remove feedback or altitude solenoid and gasket.
9. Hold air horn assembly bottom side up and remove float pin and the float and lever assembly.
10. Turn air horn assembly over and catch needle pin, spring and needle.
11. Remove needle seat and gasket.
12. Remove air cleaner bracket, then the choke plate attaching screws, filing burrs from choke shaft as necessary.
13. Remove choke plate from air horn assembly.
14. Remove choke link lever and attaching screw, then the choke shaft.
15. Remove spring retainer for mechanical fuel bowl vent flapper valve, if equipped.
16. Remove vent shaft rod and spring and the flapper valve, noting positions of ends of torsion spring on vent rod for proper assembly. Do not immerse air horn in any cleaner or solvent, as damage to vent shaft seal may result.
17. Turn main body casting upside down and catch accelerating pump check ball and weight.
18. Remove throttle shaft mechanical fuel bowl lever retaining screw at end of throttle shaft.
19. Remove operating lever spring washer, vent rod, actuating lever and E-clip.
20. Loosen throttle shaft arm set screw and remove arm and pump connector link.
21. Remove fast idle cam and shoulder screw.
22. Remove accelerator pump diaphragm housing screws and accelerator pump discharge tube, then lift out pump diaphragm assembly, pump lifter link and metering rod as a unit.
23. Remove lifter link seal.
24. Disengage metering rod arm spring from metering rod and remove metering rod from metering rod arm assembly, noting location of any washers shimming either spring for proper assembly.
25. Compress upper pump spring and remove spring retainer.
26. Remove upper spring, metering rod arm assembly and the pump lifter link from pump diaphragm shaft.
27. Compress pump diaphragm spring and remove pump diaphragm spring retainer, spring and pump diaphragm assembly from pump diaphragm housing assembly.
28. On 1982 - 83 models and 1984 Bronco II and Ranger, using sharp punch or awl, remove temperature compensated accelerator pump bleed valve plug from outside main body casting, then loosen bleed valve screw and remove valve.
29. On all models, using suitable tool, remove main metering rod jet and the low speed jet.
30. Remove retaining screws and separate throttle body flange assembly from main body casting, then remove body flange gasket.
31. Remove throttle plate retaining screws, filing staked ends as necessary.
32. Slide throttle shaft and lever assembly out of throttle body flange assembly, noting location of ends of torsion spring on throttle shaft for proper assembly.
33. On 1983 - 84 Federal models over 8500 GVW, using suitable tool, remove idle mixture screw limiter cap, then count and record number of turns required to lightly seat mixture screw needle.
34. Except on 1983 - 84 Federal models over 8500 GVW, remove idle mixture screw tamper resistant cap and cup assembly as follows:
a. Invert throttle body or carburetor assembly and cover all vacuum and fuel connection openings with tape.
b. Using hacksaw, carefully saw slot lengthwise through metal thickness of cup, being careful not to let saw blade contact throttle body.
c. Insert screwdriver in newly cut slot and twist, spreading outer cup enough to allow removal of inner cap.
d. After removing cup, count and record number of turns required to lightly seat mixture screw needle.
e. Remove screw, spring and cup.
f. Clean metal shavings from carburetor, then remove tape from openings.
35. On 1983 - 84 Federal models over 8500 GVW, remove mixture screw and spring.
36. On 1984 - 86 models except 1984 Bronco II and Ranger, remove three screws attaching ISC unit to bracket and remove unit.
37. Remove wire harness bracket, if equipped.
