Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair

Left Side
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove oil level dipstick tube support bracket.
3. On vehicles equipped with speed control, position air cleaner assembly and disconnect servo chain at carburetor, then remove servo bracket attaching bolts and nuts and position servo/bracket assembly aside.
4. On all models, disconnect electrical connector at exhaust gas oxygen sensor, if equipped.
5. Disconnect spark plug wires, then raise and support vehicle.
6. Remove exhaust pipe to manifold attaching nuts, then lower vehicle.
7. Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts and the exhaust manifold.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
Right Side
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly and heat tube.
3. Disconnect thermactor hose from downstream air tube check valve.
4. Remove downstream air tube bracket attaching bolt at rear of right side cylinder head.
5. Disconnect coil secondary wire from coil and the spark plug wires from spark plugs.
6. Remove spark plugs, then the outer heat shield.
7. Raise and support vehicle.
8. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, remove transmission dipstick tube.
9. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts and the exhaust manifold, inner heat shroud and EGR tube as an assembly.
12. Reverse procedure to install.
