Cooling system - Coolant Water/Anti-Freeze Ratio
88ford31Article No. 88-26-11
COOLANT - 6.9L AND 7.3 L DIESEL ENGINE -
WATER/ANTI-FREEZE RATIO
LIGHT-TRUCK: 1983-89 E & F-SERIES
ISSUE: The recommended anti-freeze concentration for the 6.9L and 7.3L diesel engine is 50% of an ethylene glycol type anti-freeze and 50% conditioned water. This will protect the engine coolant from freezing and losing its effectiveness in ambient temperatures of -35 degrees F (-37 degrees C). An anti-freeze concentration of up to 68% can be used for added protection if outside temperatures are expected to go below -35 degrees F (-37 degrees C).
ACTION: No corrective action is required. Refer to the water/anti-freeze ratio chart on page 33 of this TSB for recommended coolant concentrations.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE MORE THAN A 68% ANTI-FREEZE CONCENTRATION. TOO MUCH ANTI-FREEZE COULD RESTRICT ENGINE COOLANT PASSAGES AND RESULT IN OVERHEATING. TOO STRONG OF A MIXTURE ALSO CAUSES THE ANTI-FREEZE HEAT TRANSFER AND FREEZING PROTECTION QUALITIES TO WEAKEN. PURE ANTI-FREEZE WILL FREEZE AT -8 DEGREES F (-22 DEGREES C).
