^ BATTERY - GROUND CABLE DAMAGED CAUSING HARD STARTING

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-86 F SERIES

ISSUE: Hard starting (slow to crank) may be caused by a damaged battery ground cable. During acceleration the engine may roll causing the cable to stretch and pull apart at the engine attachment eyelet. This condition may also damage the ground wire for the windshield wiper motor to engine because this circuit will act as a back-up for the damaged battery ground cable.

ACTION: To correct this, inspect the battery ground cable for damage at the engine attachment eyelet. If it is damaged, install a new longer battery ground cable (E1TZ-14301-A) using the following procedure.

1. Remove the battery ground cable at the battery negative terminal.

2. Remove the battery ground cable at the frame ground attachment.

3. Remove the battery ground cable at the engine ground attachment.

4. Install a new longer battery ground cable, E1TZ-14301-A.

5. Tighten attachments at engine and frame grounds to 17-27 ft.lbs. (23-36 N-m).

6. Tighten battery ground cable at the battery negative terminal to 5-8 ft.lbs. (7-11 N-m).
