VALVE ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY - 6.9L DIESEL - Article No.
NEW DESIGN FEATURES AND SERVICE TIPS 87-16-18

LIGHT TRUCK: 1983-87 E SERIES, F SERIES

ISSUE: A new design valve rocker arm assembly replaces the old style, two (2) steel valve rocker arms and one (1) aluminum rocker arm post design. This new valve rocker arm assembly is used on 1987 E Series vehicles built with an engine serial number of 360221 or later and 1987 F Series vehicles built with an engine serial number of 368822 or later. The new valve rocker arm assembly may be used to service ALL prior 6.9L diesel engines.

Figure 9:

ACTION: If rocker arm replacement is required, refer to the following assembly and installation service procedures. Refer to Figure 9 for contents of valve rocker arm assemblies.

Figure 10:

Assembly Procedure

1. Assemble the valve rocker arm assembly parts as shown in Figure 10.

NOTE: Do not mix rocker arm assembly parts during reassembly. The rocker arm assembly must be installed on the same cylinder from which it was removed to be sure of correct mating at the pushrod and valve stem.

2. Place valve rocker arm post onto valve rocker arm bolts, then insert bolt head into the 1/2 inch socket, Figure 11. The bolt will align the post in the valve rocker arm while the socket acts as a holding fixture.

Figure 12:

3. Place valve rocker arm over the post and bolt, which are held in place by the 1/2 inch socket as shown in Figure 12. Then, position retainer over post and arm.

NOTE: Apply clean engine oil between post and valve rocker arm.

Figure 13:

4. Place the 3/4 inch socket over retainer as shown in Figure 13. Using a plastic hammer, strike socket squarely to install retainer onto post.

5. Repeat the procedure for the second rocker arm and post on the assembly.

6. After both valve rocker arm and valve rocker arm posts are installed, center the posts in the retainer using a screwdriver as shown in Figure 14.

Figure 15:

Installation Procedure

1. Prior to installing the new valve rocker arm assembly, rock assembly back and forth to create clearance between retainer and valve rocker arm, Figure 15.

NOTE: The new valve rocker arm assemblies (E7TZ-6564-B) and the old valve rocker arms may be intermixed on the same engine. Engine performance and durability will NOT be affected by intermixing components.

Figure 16:

2. Insert valve rocker arm assembly onto cylinder head as shown in Figure 16.

3. Insert existing valve rocker arm bolts through valve rocker arm posts and tighten each pair of bolts evenly to 20 ft.lbs. (27 N-m).

4. Repeat for each set of valve rocker arm assemblies.

NOTE: Torque is the same for new/old valve rocker arm assemblies.
