83ford22 Article No. 83-5-21AIR CLEANER - SNOW ACCUMULATION
- 6.9L DIESEL ENGINE
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 F SERIES
During vehicle operation in heavy snowfall or in dry loose snow conditions, excessive snow may be drawn into the air cleaner. The water resulting from the melting of this snow, if occurring in sufficient quantity, may be drawn into the engine intake manifold and cause lockup damage to the engine.
Vehicles built after February 15, 1983 should have a drain hole in the air cleaner to eliminate this water. Customers operating in this type of environment and having vehicles built prior to this date can have the drain hole added by the following procedure:
1. Remove air cleaner assembly from the vehicle, and remove the air cleaner element from the air cleaner tray.
FIGURE 20:
2. Drill a 1/4 inch diameter hole in the air cleaner tray as shown on Figure 20.
3. Clean all metal chips from the air cleaner tray.
4. Reassemble the air cleaner and reinstall in the vehicle.
