Injection Timing - Methods and Equipment

TIMING (6.9L DIESEL) - FORD VS. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER (IH) METHOD AND EQUIPMENT

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-85 E- & F-SERIES

In setting timing on the 6.9L diesel engine, be aware that International Harvester dealers use a different method and equipment than the one used by Ford dealers.

International Harvester dealers set timing by measuring injection impulse at the fuel injection nozzles (similar to the 2.4L BMW diesel engine on the Mark VII and Lincoln Continental). The specified setting will always be in BTDC~.

The Ford equipment measures combustion through a luminosity probe inserted into the No. 1 glow plug hole. The specified setting will always be in ATDC~.

The above differences should be remembered since some Ford dealers call International Harvester dealers for directions on setting the timing for maximum performance. Most International Harvester dealers are unaware of the Ford method of setting timing and may give the Ford dealer timing specifications in BTDC~. Setting timing in BTDC~ with the Ford timing equipment will result in excessive engine operating noise and will eventually cause a lack of power condition brought on by piston damage.
