PERFORMANCE POOR - INABILITY TO GAIN/MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED, (6.9L DIESEL)/T19 - TRANSMISSION RATIO CHANGE

The transmission includes a relatively numerically high ratio in third gear which limits top speed in third gear and may create inability to accelerate to highway speeds or maintain highway speeds on grades when heavily loaded. A ratio conversion kit is now available to service this condition by converting the transmission to a "close ratio" model. Since this change decreases first and reverse gear ratios, it should not be applied to vehicles requiring the current first and reverse ratios.

Remove the transmission from the vehicle (per Section 16-24 in the 1983/84 Shop Manuals), and replace with parts in the close ratio conversion kit, Part No. E4TZ- 7016-A).

NOTE: The conversion kit contains a Part No. tag (Ford Part No. E4TZ-7016-A) which is to be attached to the transmission after completing the conversion. ALSO, THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PART NO. TAG MUST REMAIN ON THE TRANSMISSION.

NOTE: The conversion kit also contains Breather Cap Assembly T94-95 and Breather Cap plug 4572D which can be installed per TSB 83-6-25 T-19 Oil Leaks Out Vent - Vehicles Over 8500 GVW (IF the breather cap has already been relocated forward and outboard from the original location as specified in TSB 83-6-25, no further modification is necessary).

The conversion kit also contains (2) T87D-42 and (1) T87D-42A poppet springs which are to be installed to improve gear shift lever detent feel and engagement.
