EXHAUST - MUFFLER - HEAT SHIELD NOISE/RATTLE - (7.5L)

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 F-250/350

Some early production muffler/heat shield assemblies were produced with inadequate tension in the upper heat shield rear retaining strap. This can result in exhaust noise/rattle.

Figure 8:

Perform the following procedure:

Check muffler and attached heat shields by hand for looseness. The shields should be firmly held to the muffler body by the front and rear securing straps. If the shields are loose (Figure 8), service as follows:

1. If front of upper shield is loose, tighten screw clamp on securing band (part of grass shield E3TA- 5A212-FA).

NOTE: Tack weld on front of upper shield is for muffler assembly shipping purposes only, and no servicing is required if these welds are cracked or broken.
2. If rear of upper shield is loose, remove securing band with sidecutters and replace with large screw clamp band, Part No. 383779-S. If large screw clamp is not available, two smaller diameter clamps fastened together can be used.
