REVISION

LIGHT TRUCK: 1983-87 E-250/350, F-250/350

ISSUE: Crankshaft removal and installation as outlined in the 1983 through 1987 Light Truck Shop Manuals, Volume B, Section 22-08-49 has been revised. This revised service procedure no longer requires the removal of the injection pump and adapter (gear tower) in order to remove the front cover.

ACTION: If service is required, use the following procedure to remove and install the crankshaft.

NOTE: Removal of the glow plugs to release compression will make it easier to move the piston and connecting rod assemblies to the top of the cylinder bores.

REMOVAL

1. With engine mounted on engine stand, Rotunda Model 014-00306, remove engine front and rear cover, oil pan, oil pump, and oil pick-up tube. Refer to the Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 22, for detailed procedures.

2. Make sure main and connecting rod bearings are marked so they can be reinstalled in their original locations.

3. Remove the eight (8) glow plugs.

4. Turn crankshaft until connecting rod cap is positioned downwards. Remove bearing cap and bearing. Install connecting rod guide, Special Tool D83T-6136-A, and push connecting rod and piston assembly up into cylinder.

5. Repeat Step 4 for the other seven (7) connecting rods and piston assemblies.

6. Remove main bearing caps. Main bearing caps are numbered to aid in reinstallation. Number one (1) is at the front of the engine.

7. Install lifting eyes, Rotunda Model T70P-6000, to crankshaft. Carefully remove the crankshaft from the block.

CAUTION: Be careful not to fracture or damage finished surface of the crankshaft.

INSTALLATION

8. Remove main bearing inserts from block and bearing caps.

9. Clean mating surfaces of engine block and main bearing caps.

10. If crankshaft main bearing journals have been refinished to an undersized tolerance, install correct undersize bearings.

NOTE: Make sure bearing inserts and bearing bores are clean. Dirt under inserts will distort bearings and cause a failure.

11. Install upper main bearing inserts with the exception of number three (3) main bearing with the oil holes in position in the bores with tang fitting in slot provided.

12. Install lower main bearing inserts in bearing caps.

13. Carefully install crankshaft into engine block.

14. Remove lifting eyes.

15. Install number three (3) upper main bearing by rolling the main bearing into place.

16. Check main bearing clearance as described in the Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 22.

17. Apply Ford recommended engine oil to journals and bearings.

18. Install main bearing caps with the exception of number three (3) main bearing. Tighten main bearing caps to specification.

19. Loosely install number three (3) main bearing cap.

Figure 17:

20. Pry crankshaft forward against thrust surface of upper half of bearing, Figure 17.

21. Hold crankshaft forward and pry number three
(3) main bearing cap to rear. This will align the surfaces of both halves of bearing.

22. With forward pressure on crankshaft, tighten cap bolts to specification.
23. Install connecting rod bearings and caps.

24. Position crankshaft toward rear of engine.

25. Check crankshaft end play.

26. Reinstall front and rear covers, oil pump, oil pick-up tube, oil pan and glow plugs.
