Diesel Data: Automotive Repair

Dealer Obligations, Technical Instructions and Parts Requirements

DEALER OBLIGATIONS:

Dealers are obligated to perform this recall service promptly after the owner brings his vehicle in for repair. United States law requires that we advise owners in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and certain territories of the procedure to be followed by them in informing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the defect is not corrected without charge within a reasonable time after the vehicle is brought in. This notice is included in the owner letter (copy attached) to be sent to owners in Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Canal Zone, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. It is also important, however, that you promptly report (to your supervising location or Wixom) any instances in which an owner will not allow you to complete this recall because of objections to delays in scheduling, or for any other reason.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The following are instructions for adding the protective shield to the water/fuel separator.

ATTACHMENT I SAFETY RECALL 486:

If the vehicle is equipped with speed control, first remove the servo assembly attaching bolts from the left fender apron and set aside the servo assembly to gain access to the separator, see Attachment I. (If necessary, refer to the Speed Control System, Section 37 in the 1984 Light Truck Body, Chassis and Electrical Shop Manual.)

The shield required by this recall should be installed as follows:

^ Remove and save the bolts securing the wire metal guard and fuel/water separator to the left front dash panel.

^ Slide the wire metal guard down the drain hose to gain access to the separator canister. Note: Fuel hoses and drain hose do not need to be removed from the fuel/water separator assembly to install the plastic recall shield.

ATTACHMENT III SAFETY RECALL 486:

^ Install the shield (E4TZ-9J309-A) required by this recall by spreading the shield and positioning it over the drain hole and the fuel/water separator canister. Note the position of the locating tabs in Attachment III.

ATTACHMENT II SAFETY RECALL 486:

^ Slide the metal guard onto the fuel/water separator assembly and attach to the dash panel using the original bolts. Torque bolts to 22-30 ft.lbs. (See Attachment II).
^ If the speed control servo was removed, reinstall the servo assembly bracket and tighten the attaching bolts to 11-13 ft.lbs. Refer to the Speed Control System, Section 37, in the 1984 Light Truck Body, Chassis and Electrical Shop Manual, if necessary.

Start engine and inspect for fuel leaks around elbow fittings or drain hose. After inspecting vehicle, installation is complete.
