SAFETY RECALL 486 - FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR SHIELD

^ VEHICLES INVOLVED - F-SERIES 4X4 CHASSIS CABS WITH 6.9 LITER DIESEL ENGINES

Dear Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has determined that certain 6.9L diesel engine 1983-1984 F-250HD/F-350 4X4 chassis cabs, when completed consistently with their respective Incomplete Vehicle Manuals, fail to conform to U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 301, "Fuel System Integrity". Our records indicate that you own a vehicle involved in this recall, which is identified by the serial number on the enclosed Form 1864.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NON-COMPLIANCE:

Some vehicles completed from the chassis cabs identified above may not meet applicable fuel spillage requirements of FMVSS No. 301 when frontally crashed into a barrier at 30 MPH under the loading conditions specified by the standard. When impacted in such manner the fuel/water separator may be punctured by the windshield washer reservoir bracket, allowing diesel fuel to leak from the canister and into the engine compartment. If this were to occur in the presence of an ignition source, the potential for a fire exists.

SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:

Ford is recalling your vehicle to correct this condition. We wish to install a protective shield for the fuel/water separator canister -- at no cost to you.

TO HAVE THIS SERVICE PERFORMED:

^ Contact a Ford dealer immediately for an appointment. Dealers have repair instructions and parts ordering information. The time needed to correct your vehicle should be less than one-half hour.
^ Present the enclosed Form 1864 to your dealership when the recall service is done. After servicing your vehicle, the dealership will return the form to us verifying that the required repair has been performed. If you lose the Form 1864, the dealership will still service your vehicle at no charge to you.

IF YOU NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE:

Please tear out the postage prepaid card from the enclosed Form 1864, complete Section 1, and return it to us. This information is needed to update our records.

IF THE DEALER DOES NOT MAKE THE REPAIR PROMPTLY AND WITHOUT CHARGE:

If you have difficulties getting this recall service performed, complete Section 3 of the prepaid postcard and mail it to us. If you still cannot get the repair done and without charge, you may wish to report that fact to: Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington, D.C. 20590; or, you may call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393.

NOTE: For owners in Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands:

Ford Motor Company maintains records of vehicles involved in service recalls. The records are kept by a computer system called CARES (Computer Assisted Recall System). When you call a dealership for an appointment, ask the Service activity to check with CARES. This will tell them if your vehicle is involved in other recall(s). If it is, the dealership can advise you about the required inspection or repair.

We regret any inconvenience this recall may cause you, but we want you to have this service performed for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built vehicle.

SAFETY RECALL 486 - FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR SHIELD
^ VEHICLES INVOLVED - F-SERIES 4X4 PICKUP TRUCKS WITH 6.9 LITER DIESEL ENGINES

Dear Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has determined that certain 6.9L diesel engine 1983-1984 F-250HD/F-350 4X4 pickup trucks that have had their factory-installed pickup boxes removed for installation of aftermarket bodies or equipment fail to conform to U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 301, "Fuel System Integrity". Our records indicate that you own a vehicle which may be involved in this recall. Your vehicle is identified by the serial number on the enclosed Form 1854. If this vehicle has been altered by removal of the pickup box, it should be returned to a Ford dealer for the following-described recall service.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NON-COMPLIANCE:

Because vehicle weights are usually affected by removal of pickup boxes and installation of aftermarket bodies or equipment such altered vehicle may not meet FMVSS No. 301 fuel spillage requirements in a 30 MPH frontal barrier crash. When impacted in such a manner the fuel/water separator may be punctured by the windshield washer reservoir bracket, allowing diesel fuel to leak into the engine compartment. If this should occur in the presence of an ignition source, the potential for a fire exists.

Note: Only those F-Series pickups which have been altered by removal of the pickup box installed by Ford are involved in this recall. if your pickup has not been altered in this manner, please read the section on page 2 entitled "IF THE PICKUP BOX INSTALLED BY FORD HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED FROM YOUR VEHICLE".

SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:

If your vehicle has been altered as described above, Ford is recalling it to correct this condition. We wish to Install a protective plastic fuel/water separator shield -- at no cost to you.

IF THE PICKUP BOX INSTALLED BY FORD HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED FROM YOUR VEHICLE:

If your pickup truck has not been altered by removal of the pickup box, the modifications described in this letter are not required for its compliance with FMVSS No. 301. However, we request that you insert this letter and accompanying materials back in the envelope and place it in your vehicle glove box as a reminder to have your dealer install a fuel/water separator shield in the event this vehicle is altered by removal of the pickup box at some future date.
