Front Axle Slip Yoke - Damaged/Contaminated

AXLE - FRONT DRIVE - SLIP YOKE WORN/CONTAMINATED - (4x4) VEHICLES

Standard maintenance procedures for 4x4 front axle slip yokes require periodic lubrication of this area. If it is suspected that the joint is contaminated or worn, service by updating the front axle with a slip yoke boot.

^ Remove the hub lock, hub and rotor and spindle (Reference Sections 11-12 and 15-34 of the Shop Manual).
^ Remove the outer shaft and joint assembly through the steering knuckle opening and inspect the slip yoke male and female splines.
^ If no damage is evident and/or the spline is contaminated; clean, relube and replace the grease seal.

^ If either spline is damaged or excessive wear is evident refer to Figure 14 and proceed as follows:

- Replace the variable shaft and U-joint assembly with the new shaft listed below. The new shaft has a machined groove to accommodate a slip yoke boot.
- Remove the shaft and slip yoke assembly (Reference Section 15-34 of the Shop Manual).
- Replace the slip yoke and its U-joint with the new slip yoke listed below. (The new slip yoke is machined to accommodate the new grease seal and slip yoke boot listed below.)
- Install the shaft and slip yoke assembly (Reference Section 15-34 of the Shop Manual).

- Install the shaft and joint assembly through the knuckle opening and install the slip yoke boot over the shaft.
- Install the new grease seal onto the slip yoke, phase the two U-joints (Reference Section 15-01 of the Shop Manual) and install the shaft spline into the slip yoke.
- Clamp the boot at the grooves on the slip yoke and variable shaft using the clamps listed below and the keystone clamp pliers (Part No. T63P- 9171-A).
^ Install the spindle, hub and rotor and hub lock (Reference Section 11-12 and 15-34 of the Shop Manual).
