Subject: Repair Procedure for Snow Accumulation in Air Cleaner - 1983 F Series Trucks with 6.9L Diesel Engines
During vehicle operation in heavy snowfall or in dry, loose snow conditions, excessive snow may be drawn into the air cleaner. After vehicle shutdown, the water resulting from the melting of this snow, if occurring in sufficient quantity, may go into the engine intake manifold and cause lockup damage to the engine upon restarting. A service procedure for correcting this concern will be published in TSB 83-5, dated March 8, 1983. The procedure involves the drilling of a drain hole in the air cleaner tray. An advanced copy of the TSB article is attached for use by your service personnel.
We are committed to assuring that our products provide the highest level of owner satisfaction and will continue to provide all of the technical information available to enable you to provide the best possible service to your customers.

Air Cleaner - Snow Accumulation - 6.9L Diesel Engine
FORD
LINCOLN-MERCURY
Light Truck 1983 F Series
During vehicle operation in heavy snowfall or in dry loose snow conditions, excessive snow may be drawn into the air cleaner. After vehicle shutdown, the water resulting from the melting of this snow, if occurring in sufficient quantity, may go into the engine intake manifold and cause lockup damage to the engine upon restarting.
Vehicles built after February 15, 1983 should have a drain hole in the air cleaner to eliminate this water. Customers operating in this type of environment and having vehicles built prior to this date can have the drain hole added by the following procedure:
1. Remove air cleaner assembly from the vehicle, and remove the air cleaner element from the air cleaner tray.
2. Drill a 1/4 inch diameter hole in the air cleaner tray as shown on the attached sketch.
3. Clean all metal chips from the air cleaner tray.
4. Reassemble the air cleaner and reinstall in the vehicle.
