LEAK - OIL FROM REAR SEAL - 6.9L AND 7.3L - CRANKSHAFT WEAR SLEEVE AND REAR OIL SEAL KIT

Article No. 88-11-17

LIGHT TRUCK: 1983-88 E SERIES, F SERIES

ISSUE: Oil leakage from the crankshaft rear oil seal may be caused by a worn seal and a worn crankshaft flange surface. A crankshaft wear sleeve and rear oil seal kit is available for rear oil seal leak repeat repairs and engine overhauls.

ACTION: If service is required, follow the normal rear oil seal installation procedures as outlined in the appropriate Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 22-08 and the following service procedure.

NOTE: VISUALLY INSPECT THE SEAL SURFACE ON THE CRANKSHAFT FLANGE. IT SHOULD BE FREE OF NICKS, SCORING, ETC. AND THE SEAL WITNESS MARKS SHOULD BE CONTINUOUS AND UNBROKEN. IF THE CONDITION OF THE CRANKSHAFT FLANGE SURFACE IS QUESTIONABLE, THE OPTIONAL CRANKSHAFT WEAR SLEEVE AND REAR OIL SEAL KIT (E5TZ- 6701-D) MUST BE INSTALLED.

1. If the crankshaft flange has been previously fitted with a wear sleeve, remove it by striking the outside diameter with a hammer and chisel. Be careful not to damage the crankshaft flange face or crankshaft outside diameter.
