Subject:
Tip-in Detonation/Spark Knock
LIGHT TRUCKS
1983 Ranger with 2.OL/2.3L Engine Calibrations: 3-41D, 3-49S, 3-5OS and
3-5OX
NOTE:
Tip-in detonation can best be described as an audible spark knock which occurs for a few seconds, when the throttle is quickly depressed.
Figure 18:
Figure 19:
If one of the subject vehicles/engine calibrations experiences unacceptable tip-in detonation (a slight amount of tip-in detonation is acceptable), the following procedure and vacuum schematics, Figures 18 and 19, outlining rerouting of the distributor advance vacuum source may be followed to alleviate the concern.
Warning:
This Modification Is Authorized Only For The Listed Engine Calibrations. Performing This Modification On Other Engine Calibrations Is Unauthorized And Could Create Liability Under Applicable Federal Or Local Laws.
1. Disconnect and remove the two vacuum hoses from the 5-way vacuum tee to the 2-port vacuum control valve (E1SE-9D473-AA) in the water bypass hose fitting. Also, remove the hoses from the 2-port vacuum control valve VCV (PVS) to the cold weather modulator (D8BE-9E862-AA) in the air cleaner and the hose to the distributor diaphragm. Cut the bundling strap around the throttle bracket to remove the hoses.
2. Remove the cold weather modulator from the air cleaner and plug the hole with a rubber grommet (377678-S).
3. Remove the 2-port vacuum control valve from the bypass water hose fitting and close the hole with a 3/8-18 pipe plug (87838-S101).
4. Run a 17.5" (420mm) long 5/32 I.D. rubber hose from the 5-way vacuum tee to the distributor diaphragm (be careful to route the hose away from the EGR tube). Replace the bundling strap (95873-S) holding the vacuum hoses to the throttle bracket clear of the throttle and kickdown rod. Close the open vacuum nipple on the 5-way tee with a rubber cap (382244-S).
5. Remove the brown and black vacuum delay valve (D3DE-12A189-AB) in the hose to the carburetor pulldown motor and replace it by a 3/16 vacuum connector (383003-S).
6. Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number, alterations performed, and the change authority (TSB number and article) as shown below. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
