Injection Timing: Adjustments

Fig. 15 Injection pump timing:

1. Disconnect ground cables from both batteries.
2. Remove air intake hose from intake manifold and air cleaner.
3. Remove injection pump distributor head plug bolt and seal.
4. Install static timing gauge adapter (tool No. 14-0303 or equivalent) and a suitable dial indicator to injection pump, Fig. 15. Install dial indicator so pointer contacts injection pump plunger and gauge reads approximately .08 inch.
5. Align timing mark on crankshaft pulley with indicator on timing case cover, then rotate crankshaft slowly counterclockwise until dial indicator pointer stops moving.
6. Zero the dial indicator, then rotate crankshaft clockwise until crankshaft timing mark aligns with indicator pin. The dial indicator reading should be .0392---.0408 inch.
7. If reading is not within specifications, loosen injection pump nuts and bolt. Rotate pump counterclockwise past correct timing position, then rotate clockwise until timing is correct to eliminate gear backlash and repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Remove dial indicator and adapter, then install injection pump distributor head plug.
9. Install air intake hose and reconnect battery ground cables.
10. Run engine and check for fuel leaks.
11. Adjust idle speed as described under ``Idle Speed, Adjust.''
