Engine - Rough Running/Lack of Power

84ford13 Article No. 84-13-11

POWER - REDUCTION OF POWER OR ROUGH RUNNING OVER 40 MPH (2.0L/2.3L) ALL CALIBRATIONS

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-84 RANGER (2.0L/2.3L)

CALIBRATIONS: All 3-41 & 3-49 Calibrations

Concerns of reduction of power and rough running engines at highway speeds over 40 mph may be due to insufficient valve stem-to-valve guide clearance or by sticking valves, resulting from deposit build-up in the guides.

Perform normal fuel and ignition system diagnosis before performing the following procedures.

Remove cylinder head per procedures outlined in the Truck Shop Manual Group 21-05.

Remove the cam followers and valves.

NOTE: It is important to keep parts in order.

Figure 9:

Inspect all valve stems and replace them if there are signs of wear, galling, scoring, etc. (Figure 9).

When replacing valves, ensure that the valve stem-toguide clearance is as stated on page 31-05-30 of the 1983 Ranger Truck Shop Manual, ream all valve guides with a standard size reamer to clean out the guide to the following diameter for both engines:

.3433 in. to .3443 in. (8.745 mm to 8.720 mm)

Maintain valve guide clearance as follows:

Intake - 0.069 mm .0027 in. Max.

0.025 mm .0010 in. Min.

Exhaust - 0.081 mm .0032 in. Max.

0.038 mm .0015 in. Min.

Service Limit - .0055 Max.

Refer to Section 21-01-17 of the 1983 Ranger/1984 Bronco II Truck Shop Manual for valve guide clearance measuring procedures.

Replace valve stem seals D42E-6A517-AB in eight (8) places per Truck Shop Manual Group 21-05.

Clean and/or replace spark plugs as required.

Install cylinder head per procedure specified in Truck Shop Manual Group 21-05.
