SURGE - (2.0L/2.3L) LIGHT ACCELERATION/ROAD LOADS - STABILIZED DRIVE - ALL CALIBRATIONS
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER
CALIBRATIONS: All 2.0/2.3L
This TSB article is a composite including all prior information supplied to the field and dealer organization on Ranger 2.0L/2.3L surge.
Concerns of engine surge during light acceleration and/or at steady road load speeds may be minimized by one or any combination of the following procedures:
^ For 2.0L Engines - Check the distributor mechanical advance as follows:
1. Remove and plug the vacuum hose which connects to the distributor diaphragm.
2. Using a timing light, check the timing advance to the following limits:
Engine Nominal Tolerance
RPM Timing Advance +/- 4~
1000 8~ 4~ -12~
1500 14~ 10~ -18~
2000 16~ 12~ -20~
3000 23~ 19~ -27~
4000 28~ 24~ -32~
3. If the centrifugal advance is not functioning to the above limits, replace the distributor (E27E-12127- BA) using the procedure outlined on Page 23-01-5 of the Ignition Section (Section 23) of the 1983 Ranger Truck Shop Manual.

If the centrifugal advance is not functioning to the above limits, replace the distributor using the procedure outlined on Page 23-01-5 of the Ignition Section (Section 23) of the 1983 Ranger Truck Shop Manual.
^ Ensure that engine idle speeds are as specified on the vehicle emission control information label.
^ Perform the MCU System check as described in Section 16 of the 1983 Car/Light Truck Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual. If system code "11" is not obtained proceed to the pin points tests as required.
^ Verify carburetor feedback solenoid function.
To check for proper function of the fuel control solenoid, turn the ignition to the "ON" position. A good (nonsticking) feedback control solenoid can be felt or heard oscillating at a constant frequency. If the solenoid is not functioning, check for the proper signal to the solenoid (7-8 VDC). If the proper signal is present at the solenoid connector, install a new feedback solenoid (E3PZ- 9S565-A) and a new solenoid gasket (E1PZ-9S521-A).
To gain access to the feedback solenoid, remove the air cleaner assembly. When removing the air cleaner assembly, DO NOT deform the air cleaner support bracket. Be sure to disconnect the air cleaner support bracket from the engine lifting eye and disconnect the duct and valve assembly support bracket. Failure to do this will result in warping the bracket and tray thus preventing the tray from sealing to the carburetor air cleaner gasket. Install a new carburetor to air cleaner gasket (C8DZ-9654-A).
CAUTION: EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN CLEANING THE CARBURETOR ASSEMBLY AIR INTAKE AREA OR WHEN TESTING THE CARBURETOR FOR VACUUM LEAKS. DO NOT ALLOW ANY CLEANING SOLVENTS OR LUBRICANTS TO ENTER THE FRESH AIR INLETS TO THE FEEDBACK SOLENOID. CLEANING SOLVENT WILL DAMAGE INTERNAL SOLENOID PARTS.
^ If the air cleaner assembly cover does not have an instructional decal referring to wing nut torque, replace the cover with a revised part number E3TZ- 9661-A.
^ Check the EGR valve for proper function as follows:
Temporarily disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve and test drive the vehicle. If there is a substantial improvement in the surge condition, replace the EGR valve with the appropriate valve from the following chart.
If there is little or no improvement with the EGR disconnected, other causal factors should be investigated without replacement of the EGR valve. With testing completed, ensure that the EGR vacuum line is reconnected.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
^ Verify that engine cranking compression is in compliance with the Ranger-Bronco II Shop Manual - Section 21-01-4.
^ IMPORTANT:
Verify that surge is not tire related as follows:
Bring the vehicle up to the speed at which the surge condition is most prevalent. At this point shift the transmission to neutral. If there is still a noticeable surge/vibration replace the wheels and tires on the concern unit with a set from a known "nonsurging" vehicle.
Figure 16:
If it is suspected that the Metering Rod been misadjusted during any previous services, the metering rod should be adjusted as follows (Figure 16):
1. Remove the carburetor air horn and gasket from the carburetor. Refer to Air Horn to Main Body Gasket Replacement for proper procedure. (See RangerBronco II Shop Manual, page 24-07-10.)
2. Remove the tamper resistant cup covering the closed plate adjusting screw. Back the screw out until it is clear of the casting.
3. Press down on the end of the pump diaphragm shaft until the assembly bottoms.
4. While holding the diaphragm assembly as in Step 3, first turn the rod adjusting screw approximately two turns clockwise to assure that the metering rod is not in contact with the body casting floor, then slowly turn the rod adjustment screw counterclockwise (Figure 16), until the metering rod just bottoms against the body casting floor under and through the main metering jet. This is "bottomed" position.
5. To adjust the metering rod from the "bottomed" position in Step 4 to "final adjusted position", hold the diaphragm assembly as in Step 3 and turn the rod adjustment screw clockwise one complete turn which will lift the rod .025" off the body casting floor.
6. To reset closed plate adjustment, turn the adjusting screw clockwise until it contacts the casting, then one additional turn clockwise. Install a new tamper resistant cup.
NOTE: Do not use the closed plate adjusting screw to set idle speeds.
7. Install the carburetor air horn with a new gasket on the carburetor.
8. Reset the idle speed as outlined in the 1983 Car/Truck Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual (pages 4-50/4-51).
9. Ensure that the zip tube connecting the fresh air intake to the air cleaner duct and valve assembly does not have any holes or cracks. If required, replace the zip tube (E3TZ-9A624-G).
