CRANKSHAFT DAMPER - REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT - 2.2L DIESEL ENGINE

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER

FIGURE 24:

The procedure described in the 1983 Ranger Shop Manual for the removal of the crankshaft damper involves the usage of a tool which attaches to tapped holes in the damper (Figure 24). The 2.2L diesel engines produced by Toyo Kogyo until 10/07/82 did not have the tapped holes in the pulley. If one of these earlier engines require removal of the crankshaft damper, the following procedure should be used:
1. Open hood
2. Disconnect battery ground cables from both batteries.
3. Remove fan and fan shroud.
4. If so equipped, remove the P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
5. Remove alternator/water pump drive belt.
6. Drain coolant and remove radiator.
7. If so equipped, loosen A/C condenser and move it out of the way.
8. Place transmission in low gear and apply parking brake.
9. Remove crankshaft damper lock bolt with an impact wrench and a 38 mm socket.
10. Remove damper from crankshaft with a suitable puller.

NOTE: Do not reinstall original damper. Replace with damper E3TZ-6312-C.

11. New damper (with tapped holes) should be installed using the normal procedure defined in the 1983 Ranger Shop Manual.
