Cold Start Cable - Buzzing/Whiring Noise

Some customers may experience a low volume metallic sounding "buzz" or "whirr" when initially starting 2.2L diesel engines with the cold start cable fully extended and locked. The noise may also be audible during driving periods. This may be due to engine compartment noise being transmitted through the cold start cable. The condition can be eliminated by following the procedure described below:
Prior to performing this service, the mechanic should verify the condition by running the engine at idle with the vehicle stationary and the windows closed. Run the engine with the cold start cable fully extended and locked and verify that a "buzz" or "whirr" exists. Then push the cable back in; if the noise is reduced, the procedure should be performed. If the noise is not affected by pushing in the cable, the source is from some other area and will not be corrected by this procedure.

Should servicing be required, install 2 pieces of 7/32"
inner diameter rubber vacuum hose (D0PZ-12226-C as shown in Figure 29, and perform the following procedure:
1. Cut a 5" and an 11" piece of rubber vacuum hose. Slice both pieces of hose lengthwise, to allow installation over the cold start cable.
2. Install the 5" long rubber vacuum hose over the cold start cable at location A and tape at both ends with E0AZ-19628-A tape.
3. Install the 11" long rubber vacuum hose over the cold start cable at location B and tape at 3 locations with E0AZ-19628-A tape.
NOTE: Disassemble the cold start cable from the instrument panel to ease the installation of the vacuum hose. Reassemble the cold start cable to the instrument panel.
