Engine: Service and Repair
EXCEPT 1985---87 4-140 EFI ENGINE
1. Raise hood, then mark location of hood hinges and remove hood.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable at engine and battery positive cable at battery.
3. Drain coolant from radiator, then remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
4. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses, engine fan, shroud and radiator.
5. Remove oil filler cap.
6. If equipped with air conditioning, remove compressor from mounting bracket and position it aside.
7. Disconnect wires from starter, alternator, ignition coil, water temperature sending unit, and oil pressure sending unit.
8. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission kickdown rod.
9. Disconnect heater hoses at engine, and fuel line at fuel pump.
10. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose.
11. Remove engine mount nuts.
12. Raise vehicle, then drain oil from crankcase and remove starter motor.
13. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
14. Remove dust cover on manual transmission vehicles, or inspection cover on automatic transmission vehicles.
15. On vehicles with manual transmission, remove flywheel housing cover lower bolts. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove converter-to-flywheel bolts, then remove converter housing lower bolts.
16. On manual transmission vehicles, remove slave cylinder.
17. Lower vehicle, then support transmission using a floor jack.
18. Remove flywheel housing or converter housing bolts.
19. Using a suitable hoist, remove engine from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
