Air Cleaner - Engine High Speed Spark Knock

83ford10

Article No. 83-16-25

SPARK KNOCK (2.0L/2.3L) - HIGH SPEED OR ROAD LOADS - 30 ~F OR LESS AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. UNITS BUILT PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 1982

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER

To reduce spark knock concerns on these vehicles, the vacuum delay valve in the line to the air cleaner door may be replaced with a new vacuum delay valve.

Detonation at high speed or road load modes at 30 ~F or less ambient temperatures may be caused by the door in the duct and valve assembly remaining closed. This allows a continual charge of hot air to enter the engine causing detonation until the door opens.

To service this, remove the blue and white vacuum retard delay valve (D8AE-9E897-AA) from the vacuum line between the air cleaner bi-metal sensor and the duct and valve motor. The blue and white valve allows a strong vacuum signal to the motor for extended periods of time holding the door closed.

Replace the valve with a pink and white valve (E3AZ- 12A208-E). Install the pink/white valve in the vacuum line with the white side toward the air cleaner. The new pink/white valve holds the vacuum for about 1/4 as long as the blue/white valve.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
