ISSUE: 1983 through 1986 model Bronco II vehicles requiring rear axle housing replacement should be serviced with the new 1987 Bronco II rear axle housing. The new rear axle housing is also designed to accept the rear anti-lock brake system (RABS). This design feature has a removable plug to allow usage on current or prior model year applications, Figure 42.

ACTION: Vehicles not equipped with a rear stabilizer bar should follow the normal service procedure outlined in the Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual, Section 15. If the vehicle is equipped with a rear stabilizer bar, the rear axle housing must be modified to avoid contact of the stabilizer bar with the left RABS fin, Figure 43. Refer to the following service procedure to perform this modification.
NOTE: The modification is to be performed prior to the installation of the rear axle housing.
CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the plug or bolt head. Don't remove bolt or chips may fall into bolt hole and/or housing.

1. Cut the left fin off flush with the carrier using a metal cutting saw. Clean all metal chips from housing before assembly, Figure 44.
2. Install rear axle housing and axle components as outlined in Section 15 of the Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual.
