Pinpoint Test G: The Head Up Display (HUD) Module Is Inoperative

Normal Operation

The Head Up Display (HUD) module is designed with a temperature sensor internal to the module. Due to extremely hot weather conditions, the temperature sensor circuit allows the HUD (Head Up Display) module to become disabled under high temperature conditions which could damage the HUD (Head Up Display) module LEDs. The LEDs remain off until the internal temperature is cool enough to operate and not damage the LEDs. The forward collision warning system still operates, but only emits a chime from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and mutes the audio system.

The HUD (Head Up Display) module is designed with a LED prove-out test. Upon each ignition cycle when the ignition switch is in RUN, the LEDs illuminate for a period of time indicating the HUD (Head Up Display) module is functional.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- HUD (Head Up Display) module

- Cruise-Control Module (C-CM)

PINPOINT TEST G : THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE IS INOPERATIVE

G1 CHECK FOR HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE LED PROVE OUT TEST

NOTE: Remove the vehicle from the extreme heat source or sunload condition prior to testing the vehicle.

- Ignition ON.

- While placing the ignition switch in RUN, observe the HUD (Head Up Display) module LEDs.

Do the HUD (Head Up Display) module LEDs illuminate?

Yes
The HUD (Head Up Display) module LEDs are operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by extreme temperatures. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to G2.

G2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.

- Carry out the network test.

Does the HUD (Head Up Display) module pass the network test?

Yes
GO to G3.

No
REFER to Information Bus, The HUD (Head Up Display) module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool Pinpoint Test T: The Head Up Display (HUD) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.

G3 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE AND C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) SELF-TESTS

- Check the HUD (Head Up Display) module and C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) DTCs from the self-tests.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For HUD (Head Up Display) module DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts Forward Collision Warning.

For C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) DTCs, REFER to Fire Suppression System.

No
GO to G4.

G4 CHECK FOR CORRECT HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE OPERATION

- Disconnect the HUD (Head Up Display) module connector.

- Check for:
- corrosion

- damaged pins

- pushed-out pins

- Connect the HUD (Head Up Display) module connector and make sure it seats correctly.

- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new HUD (Head Up Display) module. REFER to Head Up Display (HUD) Module . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
