Pinpoint Test AP: The Parking Brake Warning Chime Is Inoperative

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the parking brake warning chime request from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). When the ignition is ON, the parking brake is engaged, and the vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph). The parking brake warning chime stops sounding and resets if the parking brake is released, the ignition switch is not in the ON position, if the vehicle speed is below 5 km/h (3 mph), or after 90 seconds from the time the chime is activated.

NOTE: Make sure that the parking brake warning chime operation is verified with the vehicle moving at least 5 km/h (3 mph) with the parking brake slightly applied (just enough to turn the brake warning indicator on without damaging the rear brakes).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Brake warning indication concern

- BCM (Body Control Module)

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AP : THE PARKING BRAKE WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE

AP1 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME OPERATION

- Ignition OFF.

- On vehicles without IA (Intelligent Access), place the ignition in the OFF position with the key in the ignition lock cylinder, open the LH front door and observe the key-in-ignition warning chime operation.

- On vehicles with IA (Intelligent Access), place the ignition in the ACC state the open the LH front door and observe the key-in-ignition warning chime operation.

Does the key-in-ignition warning chime operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AP2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

AP2 CHECK THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION

- Apply the parking brake.

- Ignition ON.

- Observe the brake warning indicator.

Does the brake warning indicator illuminate?

Yes
GO to AP3.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test L Pinpoint Test L: The Brake Warning Indicator Is Never On.

AP3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0140:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AU Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0140:00.

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Chart Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes.

No
GO to AP4.

AP4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE BCM (Body Control Module) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.

No
INSTALL a new BCM (Body Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
