Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove steering wheel.
2. Remove upper and lower shrouds and steering column lock actuator knob and spring, Fig. 11. Discard knob.
3. Disconnect all electrical connectors and remove turn signal switch.
4. Remove upper shaft bearing and sleeve. Discard sleeve.
5. Remove bolts connecting housing to outer tube flange bracket. Rotate key to START, pull actuator interlock from tube and lift casting from upper shaft.
6. Remove ignition switch and lock cylinder.
7. Insert screwdriver into column lock gear and turn gear until gear retainer is broken loose. Discard retainer.
8. Remove lock bearing, gear and actuator assembly.
Installation
1. Install actuator assembly into housing, Fig. 11, and move assembly all the way toward steering wheel.
2. Install lock gear so that last tooth of gear is positioned into last tooth of actuator assembly.
3. Insert housing bearing and rotate 90 degrees. Insert lock gear retainer into cylinder bore and seat retainer using a {5-8} inch socket and hammer.
4. Rotate gear with actuator assembly to align bores of housing bearing with gear.
5. Install cylinder assembly and lightly stake column upper shaft serration to ensure an interference fit between inner bearing race and upper shaft.
6. Install lock cylinder housing assembly onto the upper shaft making sure actuator interlock enters clearance hole in tube assembly.
7. Install, but do not tighten, housing assembly to outer tube using new hex-head bolts.
8. Install upper shaft bearing and new sleeve and torque assembly bolts to 12---21 ft. lbs.
9. Install lock actuator lever and upper bearing retainer plate, making sure lever is secured by tab on plate.
10. Install ignition switch, turn signal switch, and connect all electrical connectors.
11. Install shrouds, key release spring and knob.
12. Install steering wheel, connect battery ground cable and check steering column for proper operation.
