Removal
1. From inside vehicle, remove nuts retaining steering column tube boot (3C611) to cowl panel.
2. Remove two bolts retaining steering column gear input shaft coupling (3A525) to steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
3. Set steering column tube boot aside. Remove pinch bolt at power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly and remove steering column gear input shaft coupling.
4. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
5. Remove LH front wheel and tire assembly.
6. Remove steering shaft u-joint shield (3F540).
7. Cut bundling strap retaining hydraulic power steering pressure hose (3A719) and power steering return hose (3A713) to power steering short rack (3L547).
8. Remove tie rod end (3A130) from LH front wheel knuckle (3K185) and RH front wheel knuckle (3K186).
9. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose from power steering short rack.

Note: The power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose are on the front of the steering gear housing (3548). Do not mix them with the power steering left turn pressure hose (3A714) and power steering right turn pressure hose (3A717) on the side of the steering gear housing.

10. Remove steering gear retaining nuts.

Note: The fittings are torqued into the steering gear housing and should not be removed during steering gear removal.

11. Push steering column tube boot end into vehicle and lift power steering short rack out of mounting holes.
Rotate power steering short rack so power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly will pass between brake booster and floorpan.
Carefully start working power steering short rack out through LH fender apron opening.

Note: If power steering short rack seems to be stuck, check RH rod to ensure stud is not caught on any obstacle.

12. Rotate power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly so that it clears LH fender apron opening and complete removal of power steering short rack.

Installation
1. Install new plastic seals on hydraulic line fittings.
2. Insert power steering short rack through LH fender apron.
Rotate power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly forward to completely clear fender apron opening.
To allow power steering short rack to pass between power brake booster (2005) and cowl panel, rotate power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly rearward.
3. Align steering gear bolts to bolt holes and install retaining nuts.
Tighten to 115-135 Nm (85-100 ft-lbs.).
4. Lower vehicle.
5. From engine compartment, install hydraulic power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose.
Tighten power steering pressure hose to 20-35 Nm (15-25 ft-lbs.), and power steering return hose to 20-35 Nm (15-25 ft-lbs.).

Note: Swivel movement of lines is normal when fittings are properly tightened.

6. Raise vehicle.

Bundling Strap:

7. Secure power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose to transfer tube with bundling strap as shown.
8. Install steering shaft u-joint shield.
9. Install tie rod ends to LH front wheel knuckle and RH front wheel knuckle.
Tighten castellated nuts to minimum of 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs.).
If necessary, tighten slightly more to align slot in nut with cotter pin hole.
10. Install a new cotter pin.
11. Install LH front wheel and lower vehicle.
12. From inside vehicle, pull steering column tube boot end out of vehicle and install over steering gear housing.
13. From inside vehicle, install steering column gear input shaft coupling to power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
14. Install inner steering column tube boot to cowl panel.
15. Install steering column gear input shaft coupling to power steering gear shaft and yoke assembly.
16. Fill power steering system with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F.
17. Check system for leaks and proper operation.
18. Adjust toe setting.
