Diesel Data: Automotive Repair

Left Side

1. Remove oil level indicator tube support bracket.
2. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor from fuel charging wiring, then ignition wires from spark plugs.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove exhaust manifold to converter and pipe nuts, then lower vehicle.

5. Remove exhaust manifold bolts, then lefthand exhaust manifold and gasket.
6. If installing new manifold, remove oxygen sensor.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation, except those specifying special sealant.
b. Clean manifold, cylinder head and dual converter and Y pipe mating surfaces.
c. Coat heated oxygen sensor threads with high temperature anti-seize compound.

CAUTION: Do not allow anti-seize compound to enter sensor flutes. Possible damage to heated oxygen sensor may occur.

d. Position exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold gasket on cylinder head, then install pilot bolt (lower front bolt hole on No. five cylinder). Slight warpage in exhaust manifold may cause misalignment between bolt holes in cylinder head and exhaust manifold. Elongate holes in exhaust manifold as necessary to correct misalignment. Do not elongate pilot hole.
e. Tighten exhaust manifold to 23-26 ft lb. Start engine and check for exhaust leaks.
