Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair






1. Remove console assembly as follows:
a. Remove two access covers at rear of console, then armrest retaining bolts.
b. Remove four armrest to floor bracket retaining bolts, then armrest assembly.
c. Remove gearshift lever opening finish panel and shift knob, then slide finish panel up to remove.
d. Place emergency brake lever in up position, remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up, then disconnect electrical connectors and remove top finish panel.
e. Remove two console to rear floor bracket retaining screws, then insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out.
f. On models equipped with radio opening cover plate with stowage bin, use a small screwdriver to pry cover plate out of console.
g. On models equipped with radio with stowage bin or radio with graphic equalizer, disconnect battery ground cable, install radio remover tool T87P-19061-A, or equivalent, into radio face plate. Push radio remover in approximately one inch to release clips, apply a light spreading force and pull radio out of dash, then disconnect electrical connectors.
h. Open glove compartment door and drop glove compartment assembly down, then remove two console to instrument panel retaining screws.
i. Remove four console to bracket retaining screws, then console from vehicle.
2. Remove lefthand lower instrument panel trim and steering column lower shroud.
3. Remove interlock cable retaining screw, then disconnect cable from shift lever cam.
4. Remove steering column retaining nuts, then lower column to floor.
5. Remove cable retaining clip, then disconnect electrical connector at solenoid.
6. Remove cable retaining screw from steering column, then guide interlock cable out from under console brackets.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering column retaining nuts to 15-24 ft lb and cable retaining screws at steering column and at shifter to 10-13 in lb.
8. Test cable for proper operation, ignition key should only be removable with shift lever in PARK. Shifter should be locked in PARK with ignition key removed, or with key in ON position and brake not applied. Shifter should release when brakes are applied.
