TRANSMISSION WON'T SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE -
4R70W - POLICE PACKAGE

FORD:
2004 Crown Victoria

ISSUE

Some 2004 Crown Victoria (Police Package) may exhibit an inability of the transmission to shift from 3rd into 4th gear (overdrive).

ACTION

Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Follow normal diagnostic procedures to verify no 4th gear operation or slippage.

2. Replace the overdrive band. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 307-01.

3. Replace the oil-to-air (OTA) cooler, do not flush. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 307-02 and follow all procedures.

NOTE
A NEW OTA COOLER MUST BE INSTALLED AS STATED IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLUSH THE COOLER. THE THERMOSTATIC BYPASS VALVE LOCATED INTERNALLY IN THE OTA WILL PREVENT FLUSHING.

4. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using WDS release B32.5 or higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.

5. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's). If the condition is still present, continue with normal diagnostics by symptom.
