Compressor Clutch: Adjustments

AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) CLUTCH AIR GAP ADJUSTMENT

Holding Fixture, Compressor Clutch:

SPECIAL TOOL(S)

NOTE:
- The A/C clutch air gap must be measured and adjusted, using the correct method, to ensure correct A/C function. An A/C clutch air gap that is greater than specifications may reduce A/C compressor performance or cause the A/C compressor to be inoperative, and may cause premature wear of the A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley. An A/C clutch air gap that is less than specifications may cause the A/C compressor to operate continuously, or may cause premature wear of the A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley.
- It is not necessary to recover the refrigerant for A/C clutch air gap adjustment if the A/C compressor is not being removed from the vehicle.

1. Measure the A/C clutch air gap at three equally spaced places between the A/C clutch disc and the A/C compressor pulley.
- If the clutch air gap is not within specification, proceed with adjustment.

2. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
1 Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool.
2 Remove A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.

3. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub.
- Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch disc and hub to force it from the A/C compressor shaft.
- Lift the A/C clutch disc and hub and the A/C clutch disc and hub spacer from the A/C compressor shaft.

4. Add or remove A/C clutch disc and hub spacers based on the measurements taken.
5. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.

6. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
1 Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool.
2 Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.

7. Measure the A/C clutch air gap at three equally spaced positions between the A/C clutch disc and the A/C compressor pulley.
- Repeat adjustment procedure if needed.
