Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Catalytic Converter - SVT





Material

Removal
1. Raise and support the vehicle.





2. Remove the catalytic converter lower heat shield.





3. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (H02S) electrical connector.





4. Remove the H02S sensor.





5. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.





6. Remove the catalyst monitor sensor.





7. CAUTION: Over bending of the exhaust flexible pipe may cause damage resulting in failure.

Support the exhaust flexible pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.





8. Remove the exhaust flexible pipe. Discard the gaskets and flange nuts. Install new studs, if necessary.





9. Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts. Install new studs, if necessary.





10. NOTE: Support the catalytic converter.
Remove the catalytic mounting bracket bolts.

11. NOTE: Use caution removing the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the exhaust manifold, converter mating surfaces, or the studs.

Remove the catalytic converter.





12. Remove the catalytic converter heat shields, if necessary.

Installation

1. NOTE: Lightly coat the heated oxygen sensors (H02S) with anti-seize grease.

NOTE: Always install new fasteners and gaskets.

NOTE: Do not tighten the fasteners until all components are assembled. Make sure to tighten all fasteners beginning at the front of the vehicle.

NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the manifold and the catalytic converter. To correctly seat the converter, alternately tighten the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts to specification.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
