Safety Belt Retractor and Pretensioner

SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR AND PRETENSIONER

REMOVAL

All Vehicles

WARNING:
- To avoid accidental deployment, the air bag control module backup power supply must be depleted. Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery ground cable(s) before commencing any repair or adjustment to the supplemental restraint system (SRS), or any component(s) adjacent to the SRS sensors. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- Always wear safety glasses when working on an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling an air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
- To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, do not use radio key code savers when working on the supplemental restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
- Never probe the electrical connectors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

4-door, 5-door and wagon







2. Detach the safety belt lower anchor from the floor panel.

3-door







3. Detach the safety belt lower anchor from the floor panel.
1. Remove the bolt from the anchor rail.
2. Slide the safety belt off the anchor rail.

All vehicles







4. NOTE: Certain production trim panels have a retaining clip on the front edge.

Detach the B-pillar upper trim panel from the B-pillar.
1. Detach the retaining clips.
2. Remove the safety belt lower anchor bolt and spacer from the safety belt webbing (4-door and wagon shown).
3. Feed the safety belt webbing through the B-pillar upper trim panel.







5. CAUTION: The bolt securing the safety belt anchor is held captive by a paper washer. The bolt, spacer and paper washer must remain on the safety belt anchor at all times when the safety belt is detached or removed.

Detach the safety belt upper anchor from the safety belt shoulder height adjuster.

4-door, 5-door and wagon







6. Remove the B-pillar lower trim panel.

3-door







7. NOTE: The screws are located behind the backrest and beneath the seat cushion.

Remove the lower trim panel.
1. Remove the lower screw.
2. Remove the upper screw.
3. Detach the front clips.
4. Detach the upper clips.

All vehicles







8. Detach the guide loop from the B-pillar.
1. Slide the guide loop backwards.
2. Slide the guide loop down.
3. Detach the guide loop.







9. Disconnect the safety belt retractor and pretensioner electrical connector.







10. Remove the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1. Remove the retaining bolt.
2. Lift the retractor to detach locating tang.

INSTALLATION

WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when working on an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling an air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
- Never probe the electrical connectors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.























1. CAUTION:
- Make sure the spacer is correctly located between the floor covering and inner sill.
- Make sure that the rear end of the anchor rail, on 3-door vehicles, is correctly located before tightening the bolt
- Make sure the pin on the B-pillar trim is located correctly into the height adjuster.


NOTE: Make sure the safety belt shoulder height adjuster locking control is correctly located on the safety belt shoulder height adjuster.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
