Tie RodRemoval
1. Remove the steering gear.
2. NOTE: Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the tie-rod end.
Remove the tie-rod end and locknut.
1 Remove the tie-rod end.
2 Remove the tie-rod end locknut.
3. Remove the boot.
1 Remove the clamps.
2 Remove the boot.
^ Disconnect the breather pipe (if equipped).
4. Rotate the pinion to expose the rack gear teeth.
5. CAUTION: To counter the extensive torque forces required to remove the tie-rod, clamp the rack gear teeth in a suitable vise. Do not clamp the steering gear body.
CAUTION: Make sure vise jaw protectors are used.
NOTE: It may be necessary to secure the rack gear teeth with the steering gear in the vertical position to facilitate removal of the tie-rod.
Secure the steering gear in a suitable vise. Using a suitable pipe wrench, remove the tie-rod.
Installation
1. NOTE: Remove all traces of thread locking compound from the rack.
Using a suitable wrench, install the tie-rod.
^ Apply Thread locking compound to the inner threads of the new tie-rod.
2. NOTE: Install the boot using new clamps.
Install the boot.
1 Install the boot.
2 Install the clamps.
^ Connect the breather pipe (if equipped).
3. NOTE: Make sure the tie-rod end is secured by the same number of turns used to remove it.
Install the tie-rod end and locknut.
4. Install the steering gear.
5. Check the toe adjustment.
