Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair

Crossmember

Removal

All vehicles
1. Remove the stabilizer bar.





3-door, 4-door and 5-door

2. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the shock absorber lower retaining bolt at this stage.

Attach the shock absorber to the wheel knuckle.





All vehicles
3. NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Remove the rear lower arms.





4. CAUTION: The front lower arm is marked FRONT. Make a note of the position of the front lower arm to aid installation.

Remove the front lower arms.





5. NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Detach the upper arms from the wheel knuckles.





6. NOTE: Make a note of the position of the upper arms to aid installation.

NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Remove the upper arms.





Wagon

7. CAUTION: Support the wheel knuckle to prevent damage.

Using a suitable cable tie, support the wheel knuckle.

All vehicles
8. Lower and remove the transmission Jack.





9. NOTE: Support the exhaust system with a suitable axle stand.

Detach the exhaust system from the crossmember exhaust hanger insulator.
^ Lower the exhaust system to give sufficient clearance from the crossmember.

10. Using a suitable transmission Jack, support the crossmember.





11. Remove the crossmember (three bolts each side).

Installation

NOTE: Final tightening of the rear suspension components should be carried out at the design height setting.





All vehicles
1. Using a suitable transmission Jack, locate the crossmember.





2. Install the crossmember (three bolts each side).
3. Lower and remove the transmission jack.





4. Attach the exhaust system to the crossmember exhaust hanger insulator.
^ Remove the axle stand.





5. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the upper arm retaining bolts at this stage.

NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Install the upper arms.





6. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the upper arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolts at this stage.

Attach the upper arms to the wheel knuckles.





7. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the front lower arm retaining bolts at this stage.

Install the front lower arms.





8. NOTE: Do not tighten the rear lower arm retaining bolts at this stage.

NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Install the rear lower arms.
9. Set the suspension to the design height setting.





10. NOTE: Wagon shown, 3-door, 4-door and 5-door similar.

Tighten the upper arms to crossmember retaining bolts on both sides.





11. Tighten the upper arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolts on both sides.





12. Tighten the front lower arm retaining bolts on both sides.





3-door, 4-door and 5-door
13. Tighten the rear lower arm adjustment cam nuts and rear lower arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolts on both sides.





Wagon

14. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the rear lower arm to wheel knuckle bolts at this stage.

Tighten the rear lower arm adjustment cam nut on both sides.

All vehicles

15. NOTE: Do not attach the stabilizer bar to the rear lower arms at this stage.

Install the stabilizer bar.





Wagon
16. Detach the rear lower arms from the wheel knuckles on both sides.





3-door, 4-door and 5-door
17. Detach the shock absorbers from the wheel knuckles on both sides.

All vehicles
18. Lower the suspension from the design height setting.





3-door, 4-door and 5-door
19. Attach the stabilizer bar to the rear lower arms on both sides.

All vehicles
20. Install the springs.
21. Check the rear wheel alignment.
