Removal
1. Remove the battery tray.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Remove the air cleaner intake pipe.
4. Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts.
5. Remove the starter motor upper retaining bolts.
- Detach the ground cable from the transaxle.
6. Detach the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the transaxle.
7. CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line from the transaxle.
- Remove the spring clip.
8. Loosen the strut and spring assembly upper mounting retaining nuts by five turns on both sides.
9. Remove the subframe.
10. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.
11. CAUTION: Over bending of the exhaust flexible pipe may cause damage resulting in failure.
Support the catalytic converter with a suitable transmission jack.
12. Detach the exhaust flexible pipe from the tailpipe and muffler assembly.
- Discard the nuts and gasket.
13. CAUTION: The catalytic converter must be supported while the support bracket is removed.
Remove the catalytic converter support bracket.
- Detach the catalyst monitor sensor from the catalytic converter.
14. Detach the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
- Discard the gasket and nuts.
- Detach the heated oxygen (H02S) sensor from the catalytic converter.
- Remove the catalytic converter.
15. Remove the transmission jack.
16. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
1. Detach the gearshift cable and the selector cable from the selector levers.
2. Detach the retaining bracket from the transaxle.
17. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
CAUTION: Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
Detach the right-hand halfshaft and the intermediate shaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
- Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- Discard the center bearing cap and locknuts.
18. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
CAUTION: Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
Using the special tool, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
- Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- Discard the snap ring.
19. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
20. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield.
21. Lower the vehicle.
22. Install the special tools.
23. Remove the rear engine mount.
- Discard the rear mount center retaining nut.
24. Using the special tools, lower the engine and transaxle assembly.
25. Remove the engine rear mount bracket.
26. Raise and support the vehicle.
27. NOTE: Do not disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
Detach the starter motor from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
28. Remove the transaxle right-hand retaining bolts.
29. Using suitable securing straps, secure the transaxle on a transmission jack.
30. Remove the transaxle left-hand retaining bolts.
31. Remove the transaxle.
