Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Catalytic Converter - 2.01- SPI





Material

Removal





1. Remove the manifold heat shield nuts and the manifold heat shield. Discard the nuts.





2. Remove the manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts.
Discard the nuts and gaskets. Install new studs, if necessary.
3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.





4. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.





5. Remove the catalyst monitor sensor.





6. Remove the catalytic converter-to-flex pipe nuts. Discard the nuts and gasket. Install new studs, if necessary.





7. NOTE: Make sure not to damage the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter mating surfaces or the studs.

Remove the catalytic converter.
1. Remove the lower clamp bolts and the clamp.
2. Loosen the bracket bolts.

Installation





1. NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold, the catalytic converter and the flex pipe. Make sure not to damage the exhaust manifold, the converter or the studs during installation.

Position the new gasket and the catalytic converter in the vehicle, then loosely install the lower clamp bolts.
2. Lower the vehicle.





3. NOTE: To correctly seat the converter, alternately tighten the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts to specification.

Install the new catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.





4. Install the manifold heat shield.
5. Position the vehicle on a hoist.





6. Install a new gasket. Install new catalytic converter-to-flex pipe nuts.





7. Install the lower clamp bracket.





8. Tighten the bracket bolts.





9. NOTE: Apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the sensor before installation.

Install the catalyst monitor sensor.





10. Connect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
11. Lower the vehicle.
