System Description and Operation
SAFETY BELT SYSTEMWARNING:
- All safety belt components including retractors, buckles, front safety belt buckle support assemblies (slider bar), child safety seat tether brackets and attaching hardware in use during a collision must be removed and new components installed. New safety belt components should also be installed where safety belts not in use during a collision, are inspected and found to be damaged or operate incorrectly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- All vehicles fitted with the optional passenger air bag from the factory have a warning sticker attached to the sun visor, prohibiting the use of rear facing child seats. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
The occupant restraint system consists of the following components:
1. driver three-point lap and diagonal inertia reel safety belt retractor (and pretensioner for vehicles equipped with the supplemental restraint system [SRS])
2. three-point lap and diagonal inertia reel retractors in all passenger positions.
3. driver safety belt buckle incorporating a driver safety belt unfastened warning switch
4. front passenger safety belt buckle (and pretensioner for vehicles equipped with the SRS)
5. standard safety belt buckles in all rear passenger seat positions.
Each of the passenger safety belts are equipped with automatic locking retraction (ALR) to allow the safety belt to be tailored to a child seat.
The driver safety belt buckle switch illuminates a warning indicator in the instrument cluster if the safety belt is not fastened.
An additional safety belt use reminder will provide the driver with an audible and visual reminder of a driver safety belt unfastened condition. The reminder will continue for up to five minutes by producing a chime and illuminating the safety belt unfastened warning indicator in the instrument cluster, when the ignition is in the RUN position. The safety belt use reminder will only commence following the completion of the existing driver safety belt unfastened warning time period. The safety belt use reminder may be stopped within the five minute activation period by fastening the driver safety belt.
The driver may disable the safety belt use reminder feature on each ignition cycle by buckling and unbuckling the driver safety belt. Semi-permanent disable is programmable by the customer following the instructions contained in the Owner Guide.
The center rear safety belt retractor is mounted onto the rear parcel shelf on 4-door vehicles. 3-door and wagon are equipped with a center rear safety belt which is incorporated into the rear seat backrest.
