Shift Cable: Service and Repair

Selector Lever Cable

Removal
Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec-E (Zetec) engine
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner.

All vehicles
3. Raise and support the vehicle.





4. CAUTION: Excessive bending of the flexible exhaust pipe may cause damage resulting in failure. Support the flexible exhaust pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.

Support the flexible exhaust pipe, using a suitable wrap.





5. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and detach the support insulators.
- Discard the gasket.





6. Disconnect the center exhaust hanger and support the exhaust with wire.





7. Remove the exhaust heat shield.
- Unclip the selector lever cable.





8. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever assembly.
1. Open the adjuster assembly by turning the selector lever cable outer sleeve.
2. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission range (TR) sensor bracket.
3. Remove the selector lever cable from the bracket.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Remove the floor console.





11. Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever.
1. Shift the selector lever to "P".
2. Unclip the selector lever cable.
3. Unclip the selector lever cable outer sleeve.





12. Remove the center armrest brace.





13. Remove the center console lower trim panels (left-hand side shown).
- Remove the screws.
- Release the clip.





14. Remove the footwell heater channel.





15. Remove the heater housing cover (right-hand side shown).
- Unclip the four clips.
- Remove the two screws.





16. Detach the floor covering and the insulator material and position it to one side (heat exchanger shown removed).
17. Attach a suitable length of draw cord to the transaxle end of the selector lever cable and secure it to the transaxle.





18. Remove the selector lever cable grommet.
19. Remove the selector lever cable.
- Pull the cable and draw cord through the floor panel.

Installation
All vehicles
1. Attach the draw cord to the transaxle end of the selector lever cable.
2. Pull the selector lever cable through the floor panel.





3. Install the selector lever cable grommet.





4. Secure the insulator material and the floor covering with adhesive tape (head exchanger shown removed).





5. Install the heater housing cover (right-hand side shown).
- Locate the four clips.
- Install the two screws.





6. Install the footwell heater channel.





7. Install the center console lower trim panels (left-hand side shown).
- Install the clip.
- Install the screws.





8. Install the armrest brace.





9. Install the selector cable to the selector lever.
1. Shift the selector lever to "P".
2. Clip in the selector lever cable outer sleeve.
3. Clip in the selector lever cable.
10. Install the floor console.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Remove the draw cord.





13. Connect the selector lever cable to the selector lever assembly.
1. Position the selector lever cable.
2. Connect the selector lever cable to the transmission range (TR) sensor bracket.
- Shift the selector lever to "D".
3. Secure the adjuster assembly by turning the selector lever cable outer sleeve.





14. Install the exhaust heat shield.





15. Connect the center exhaust hanger and remove the support wire.





16. NOTE: Install a new exhaust flange gasket.

Attach the exhaust pipe support insulators and connect the front exhaust pipe.





17. Remove the support wrap.
18. Adjust the selector lever cable.
Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec-E (Zeta) engine
19. Connect the battery ground cable.
20. Install the air cleaner.
