Clutch System Bleeding

CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.

NOTE: Do not reuse brake fluid.

Vehicle with 2.0L engine






1. Remove the air cleaner.

1. Disconnect the electrical connector at the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

2. Detach the intake pipe.






2. Remove the air intake pipe.

Vehicle with 2.3L engine

3. Disconnect the battery.






4.Remove the battery hold-down clamp bolt and position the clamp assembly aside.

5. WARNING: When lifting a battery, excessive pressure on the end walls could cause acid to spew through the vent caps, resulting in personal injury. Lift with a battery carrier or with your hands on opposite corners. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Remove the battery.






6. Remove the bolts and the battery tray.

All vehicles

7. Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.






8. Drain the brake fluid reservoir to the MIN mark.

9. Remove the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple dust cap.






10. Using the special tool, bleed the clutch system.

1. Fill the reservoir ofthe special tool with approximately 120 ml of brake fluid.

2. Connect the reservoir hose to the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple.

3. Loosen the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple.

4. Pump approximately 100 ml of brake fluid into the clutch system.






11. Tighten the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple.






12. Remove the special tool.

13. Install the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple dust cap.

14. Install the brake fluid reservoir cap.






15. Check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir and add as necessary.

16. NOTE: Engage the reverse gear carefully. Test the functionality of the clutch control system.

- Start the engine, after 2 seconds depress the clutch pedal, carefully engage the reverse gear. If there are abnormal noises, bleed the clutch control system automatically by depressing the clutch pedal 4 or 5 times. During bleeding, full travel of the clutch pedal must be reached.

- Test the functionality of the clutch control system again after 30 seconds. If there are still abnormal noises carry out steps 4 to 11 again.

17. Install the air intake pipe.






18. Install the air cleaner.

1. Connect the electrical connector of the MAF sensor.

2. Install the air intake pipe.

Vehicle with 2.3L engine

19. Install the battery tray.

20. Install the battery.

21. Install the battery hold-down clamp and bolt.

22. Connect the battery.
