Removal

Special Tools And Equipment:





Special Tool(s)

All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

3.8L engines
3. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe.

4.6L engines
4. Remove the dual converter H-pipe.

All vehicles





5. Disconnect the transmission harness electrical connector.
6. If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.





7. NOTE: To maintain the initial driveshaft balance, mark the REAR driveshaft yoke and the axle pinion flange so they may be installed in their original positions.

Remove the driveshaft bolts.





8. Slide the driveshaft back enough to index-mark the driveshaft, the extension housing and the output shaft. Separate the driveshaft from the transmission.





9. Disconnect the connector.





10. Disconnect the connector.

3.8L engines





11. Remove the torque converter cover.





12. Remove the four torque converter nuts.

4.6L engines





13. Remove the transmission inspection cover.
1 Remove the two bolts.
2 Remove the transmission inspection cover.





14. Remove the rubber plug to access the nuts.





15. Rotate the crankshaft/flexplate assembly to access all the nuts.

All vehicles





16. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.





17. Disconnect the transmission shift linkage.





18. Remove the cable from the bracket.





19. Remove the starter.
1 Disconnect the electrical connectors.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the starter.
20. Position a suitable high-lift transmission jack under the transmission.





21. Unclip the connectors.





22. Remove the bolts.





23. Remove the bolts.

3.8L engines





24. Remove the bolts.





25. Remove the bolt.

All vehicles





26. Remove the bolts.





27. Unclip the harness.





28. WARNING: The torque converter is heavy and may result in injury if it falls out of the transmission. Secure the torque converter in the transmission.

Using the special tool, secure the torque converter in the transmission then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
29. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler- backflushing and cleaning if the transmission is being overhauled or installing a new or remanufactured transmission.
