Seats Removed

DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION PROCEDURES

There are two deactivation and reactivation procedures.
- One procedure requires removal of the front seats. This procedure will be used when diagnosing or repairing a seat side air bag concern. This procedure will also be used when diagnosing or repairing any in-seat or seat-mounted components of a seat equipped with a seat side air bag. The seat must be removed when carrying out repairs on a seat equipped with a seat side air bag.
- The other procedure does not require front seat removal during the diagnostic and repair process. This procedure will be used when diagnosing or repairing a concern that is not related to a seat equipped with a seat side air bag.

Deactivation Procedure

WARNING:
- If the supplemental restraint system (SRS) is being serviced, the system must be deactivated and restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed.

The air bag restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed and the air bag modules reconnected when the system is reactivated to avoid non-deployment in a collision, resulting in possible personal injury.
- Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
- The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.

NOTE:
- Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a seat equipped with a seat side air bag with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose or repair a seat concern when equipped with a seat side air bag, the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the seat side air bag electrical connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
- After diagnosing or repairing an SRS, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.
- After diagnosing or repairing a seat system, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.
- The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The side impact sensors are attached to the rocker panels, near the seats.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

2. Remove the driver air bag module.
3. Attach Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F395 to the clockspring side of the driver air bag module electrical connector.

4. Remove the glove compartment.
5. Disconnect the passenger air bag electrical connector.
1 Reaching over the cross-car beam, slide the passenger air bag module electrical connector lock downward.
2 Squeeze the electrical connector locking tabs and pull the electrical connector from the passenger air bag module.

6. Attach Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F395 to the harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
7. Remove the affected front seat(s).
8. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
9. Move and tilt the remaining front seat to its highest and most forward position.
10. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
11. Attach Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-133 to both the driver and passenger seat side air bag module electrical connectors.
12. Access the passenger safety belt retractor and pretensioner located behind the passenger rear quarter trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel.
14. Attach Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F395 to the passenger safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
15. Access the driver safety belt retractor and pretensioner located behind the driver rear quarter trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel.
16. Disconnect the driver safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
17. Attach Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F395 to the driver safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
18. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
19. Prove out the system. Prove Out Procedure

Reactivation Procedure

WARNING:
- To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings and notes at the beginning of the deactivation/reactivation procedure.
- The air bag restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed and the air bag modules and safety belt pretensioners must be reconnected when the seat is re-installed and the system is reactivated to avoid non-deployment in a collision, resulting in possible personal injury.
- Restraint system tools are for restraint system service only. All tools must be removed from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove tools could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
2. Install the affected front seat(s).
3. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool and reconnect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.
4. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool and reconnect the driver seat safety belt buckle retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
- Install the rear quarter trim panel.

5. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool and reconnect the passenger seat side air bag electrical connector.
6. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool and reconnect the passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
- Install the rear quarter trim panel.

7. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
8. Move the front seats to their most rearward position.
9. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
10. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
11. Reconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
12. Install the glove compartment.
13. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the clockspring electrical connector.
14. Install the driver air bag module.
15. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
16. Prove out the system. Prove Out Procedure
