Power Locks: Description and Operation

HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS

The hood latch is controlled by the mechanical interior hood release handle and cable.

The door latch system contains a latch that is fastened to the inside of the door frame and is controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The door latch contains the door ajar switch and the lock actuator. The door locks are actuated by a remote transmitter, the interior door lock / unlock switches or manually (lock cylinder / push-button rod).

The luggage compartment lid latch system contains a lid latch with a mechanical interior release handle and cable and a release solenoid. The luggage compartment lid latch can be released using the luggage compartment lid release switch, the remote transmitter or the luggage compartment lid lock cylinder.

The keyless entry system uses a remote transmitter to communicate with the remote keyless entry (RKE) module. The RKE module sends a signal to the rear electronics module (REM) which controls the output functions of the door locks and luggage compartment lid. The REM is located in the RH rear side of the luggage compartment.

Individual lock cylinders are repaired by discarding the inoperative cylinder and building a new lock cylinder using the appropriate lock repair package. The lock repair package includes a detailed instruction sheet to build the new lock cylinder to the current key code of the vehicle

When installing the removable top latches, they can only be adjusted at the time of installation.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Locking and Unlocking
The driver and passenger door lock actuators and the luggage compartment lid release solenoid are controlled by the REM.

The driver and passenger door lock/unlock actuators are hard wired to the REM.

The standard corporate protocol (SCP) - commanded locking feature covers the locking and unlocking response of the REM module to the SCP network commands that it receives from the remote keyless entry module.

Smart Lock
The smart lock feature is controlled by the REM. This feature prevents the operator from accidentally locking the ignition keys in the vehicle. When the REM receives a lock command from the door lock control switch, a key-in ignition status from the instrument cluster, or door ajar status from the front electronics module (FEM), the REM commands the driver door to unlock. This feature is configurable.

Auto Lock
The auto lock feature is controlled by the REM. The doors lock, whenever the vehicle is being driven, upon receiving the ignition switch status, the transmission PRNDL status, the brake pedal status, the driver and passenger door ajar switch status. These inputs are communicated through the communication network. This feature is configurable.

Luggage Compartment Lid
The luggage compartment lid release solenoid is controlled by the FEM and the REM. The luggage compartment lid release switch is hardwired to the FEM. When the switch is active, the FEM will send a command to the REM through the SCP communication network. The REM also needs the vehicle speed status from the network in order to activate the luggage compartment lid release solenoid.
