DISASSEMBLY

WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Do not set a live side air bag module down on the cover tear seam. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
- Side air bag modules with damaged covers must be replaced.

NOTE:
- If a side air bag deployment took place the seat back pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be replaced. The seat back frame should be replaced if necessary.
- Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and perform the diagnostic procedure again.
- The driver seat is shown, the passenger seat is similar.

1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The side impact sensors are attached to the rocker panels, near the seats.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the seat removal and installation procedure.

Remove the front seat.

4. Remove the front seat backrest.

Part 1:

Part 2:

5. Disassemble the components in the order listed in the illustration and table. To remove individual components, carry out only the given steps.

Item 5: Head Restraint Sleeves Disassembly Note

1. NOTE:
- The inboard and outboard head restraint sleeves are not interchangeable.
- The head restraint sleeves incorporate an alignment tab that must face forward when installed.

Squeeze together the tip of the head restraint sleeve and pull the sleeve out of the frame tube.

Item 6: Backrest Trim Cover Disassembly Note

1. WARNING: Front seat back trim covers installed on seats equipped with side air bags cannot be repaired. They are to be replaced (cleaning is permissible).

Release the backrest trim cover J-clip.
- Make note of the side air bag module wire harness and lumbar cable (on driver seat only) routing for installation.

2. Remove and discard the hog rings.

1 CAUTION: Use care when separating the seat back trim cover from the hook and loop strip, or the hook and loop strip could be torn from the seat back foam.

Reach a hand under the trim cover and separate the hook and loop strips.

2 Peel up the seat back trim cover in an inside-out fashion to the row of hog rings.
3 Remove all the hog rings.

3. Remove the trim cover.

Item 9: Backrest Foam Pad Disassembly Note

1. Remove all the hog rings. Remove the backrest foam pad.

ASSEMBLY

1. WARNING:
- Front seat back trim covers installed on seats equipped with side air bags cannot be repaired, they are to be replaced (cleaning is permissible).
- Do not disconnect the wire connector at the side air bag module. This is a permanent connection, doing so may result in air bag accidental deployment, which may result in personal injury.
- To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions and notes at the beginning of the removal procedure.

NOTE: If installing a new side air bag module, use new retaining nuts. If the same side air bag module is to be reused then reuse the side air bag module nuts.

To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.

2. Install the front seat backrest.

3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the seat removal and installation procedure.

NOTE: Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.

Install the front seat.

4. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

5. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

Item 13: Side Air Bag Module Assembly Note

1. WARNING:
- Inspect the mounting surfaces of the side air bag module and the seat back frame mounting bracket for any foreign objects before installing the side air bag module. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Inspect the side air bag cavity in the seat back pad for any foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Before installing the side air bag module, check it for damage and foreign objects. If the air bag module is damaged, replace it. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
- If the air bag cover has separated or the air bag material has been exposed, install a new side air bag module. Do not attempt to repair the air bag module. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, in the event of an air bag deployment.

Position the side air bag module and wire harness through the outboard opening in the side of the seat back cushion. Position the side air bag module onto the bracket.

Item 12: Side Air Bag Module Nuts Assembly Note

1. NOTE: If installing a new side air bag module, use new retaining nuts. If the same side air bag module is to be reused, then reuse the side air bag module nuts.

Install the side air bag module nuts.

Item 11: Side Air Bag Wire Harness Assembly Note

1. NOTE: If the pin-type retainers are damaged, install new retainers. This will keep the wire harness routed correctly.

Install the side air bag wire harness to the seat cushion pan.
1 Install the side air bag module electrical connector to the bracket.
2 Install the side air bag module wire harness pin-type retainers to the seat pan.

Item 6: Seat Back Trim Cover Assembly Note

1. WARNING: Front seat back trim covers installed on seats equipped with side air bags cannot be repaired. They are to be replaced (cleaning is permissible).

CAUTION: Stainless steel hog rings need to be used on seats with side air bag modules. This will ensure correct deployment of the side air bag.

NOTE: Check that the seat back pad is positioned around the seat back frame when repositioning the seat back trim cover.

Reposition the seat back trim cover.
