BODY - CONVERTIBLE TOP WEAR/SCUFF - VEHICLES PRODUCED BEFORE 11/11/2003

ISSUE





Some 2004 Thunderbird vehicles produced before 11/11/2003 may exhibit wearing/scuffing of the upper outside surface of the convertible top on the driver and/or passenger side. This wear may be noticed near the seam on each side of the top over the driver and/or passenger seat area (Figure 1). The wear may be caused by the lowered convertible top rubbing against a flange on the underside of the removable roof when installed.

ACTION

Perform the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
IF THE CONVERTIBLE TOP IS BEING REPLACED, PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE PRIOR TO REPLACEMENT OR DAMAGE MAY RESULT TO THE REPLACEMENT CONVERTIBLE TOP.

NOTE
THE VEHICLE'S REMOVABLE ROOF MUST BE PRESENT TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE.

1. Remove the removable roof from the vehicle.





2. Locate the flange on the underside of the removable roof, located under the rear of the package tray toward rear window (Figure 2).

NOTE
FLANGE RUNS ALONG THE WIDTH OF THE REMOVABLE ROOF.





3. Using 400 grit sandpaper, sand the edge of the flange smooth from the outside edge inboard about 15.24 cm (6") on each side (driver and passenger) of the removable roof (Figure 3).

4. Wipe the sanded edges of the flange on each side of the removable roof clean with a dry cloth.





5. Apply two (2) pieces of protective tape, part # 4W6Z-76202W30-BA to the sanded flange edges, one (1) piece of tape on each side of the removable roof (Figure 4).

NOTE
WRAP THE PROTECTIVE TAPE OVER THE SANDED FLANGE EDGES ON EACH SIDE OF THE REMOVABLE ROOF (FIGURE 4).

6. Reinstall the removable roof.

NOTE
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE THUNDERBIRD REAR DECK CARE KIT PART # 4W6Z-76202W30-AA IS INSTALLED BETWEEN THE REMOVABLE ROOF AND THE VEHICLE TO HELP PREVENT PAINT SCUFFING TO THE REAR DECK AREA OR SQUEAKING FROM THE REMOVABLE ROOF WHEN INSTALLED. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED WITH THE KIT.
